Goster ist ein Kommissar Mitte 40, der letztlich die Sensibilität besitzt, die Zufälle des Lebens auf sich wirken zu lassen. Die Welt ist kontingent und böse. Sowohl das Verbrechen als auch die Aufklärung überschreiten die Grenze des Rationalen. Goster hat die Gabe ohne Resignation festzustellen, dass die Fälle, die er zu lösen hat, sich wie von selbst erklären, weil das Verbrechen für das konventionelle Denken nicht mehr fassbar ist. Die Stadt ist zur denkenden Kraft geworden.
