Kurt Bayer erlebte in seiner langen Ökonomen-Karriere viele Institutionen: als Student Universitäten in Graz, Bologna und den USA, als Forscher und Funktionsträger das Österreichische Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (WIFO), das Finanzministerium in Wien, die Weltbank in Washington , D.C. oder die Europäische Bank für Wiederaufbau und Entwicklung (EBRD) in London. Dabei wandelte er oft auf einem schmalen Grat zwischen Loyalität zu seinem jeweiligen Arbeitgeber und seiner Lust am Kritisieren und der Neugierde nach innovativen Ideen. In den hier versammelten kurzen Vignetten geht es aber nicht um die großen Linien der österreichischen und internationalen Wirtschaftspolitik, sondern um den »soft underbelly« der Politik und ihrer Macher und Macherinnen. Sie zeigen das allzu Menschliche einer oft ernsten Materie. Auch ein mächtiger Weltbankpräsident James D. Wolfensohn erscheint da als fast normaler Mensch mit Macken.

Kurt Bayer is a self-employed economics consultant, having recently worked as a Board Director at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London. In former incarnations, he was an economics researcher at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research in Vienna, a board director at the World Bank, an economist at the Austrian Ministry of Finance and a public employee dealing with economic policy and International Financial Institutions.
