Hanns Heinz Ewers trat als erster deutscher Schriftsteller bereits vor 1914 entschieden für die Belange der Kinematografie ein. Neben seinem theoretischen Engagement schrieb der enthusiastische Verehrer des 'Rollfilms' auch für die Filmindustrie Manuskripte, u.a. ist er der Autor des ersten deutschen ,Kunstfilms', DER STUDENT VON PRAG (1913) - das phantastische Thema, die Persönlichkeitsspaltung, signalisierte bereits ein Merkmal des sogenannten Filmexpressionismus der 1920er Jahre.
