Die Autorin wurde 1983 in Ruanda geboren. Sie gehört der Volksgruppe der Tutsi an. Der Völkermord an den Tutsi in Ruanda fand 1994 statt als sie 11 Jahren alt war. Sie überlebte die Zeit, in der in Hundert Tagen fast 1 Millionen Menschen, vorwiegend Tutsi, auf schrecklichste Weisen umgebracht wurden. Sie selbst wurde durch eine Machete am Kopf schwer verletzt. Aus diesem Grund konnte sie vier Jahre nicht sprechen. Sie verlor ihre Eltern und viele ihrer Verwandten. Das hat ihr gesamtes Leben beeinflusst und tut dies auch noch heute. Sie lebt seit 2010 mit ihrer Familie in Deutschland.
