Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Vasily Polenov, Ivan Shishkin and Isaac Levitan. A boy of sixteen falls in love with the young woman next door and discovers whose mistress she already is. Turgenev said it was the only one of his stories he could still read with pleasure, and that all of it had happened. This edition pairs the stories with sixty plates of Russian landscape painting, among them Isaac Levitan, Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin, and uses the Isabel Florence Hapgood translation.
