Complete and unabridged, with 99 full-page plates by Lovis Corinth, Johan Christian Dahl and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. A married woman leaves her husband for a cavalry officer and finds that society will forgive the affair but not the honesty. Tolstoy began it meaning to write about an adulteress who deserved her fate, and the book turned under him: Anna grows larger than the judgement he had planned. Running alongside her is Levin, mowing hay and asking what a life is for - Tolstoy himself, barely disguised. Its 63 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
