Complete and unabridged, with 30 full-page plates by Domenico Induno, Gerolamo Induno and Giovanni Fattori. A young Italian nobleman wanders onto the field at Waterloo without understanding a thing he sees, and spends the rest of the book in the intrigues of a small court. Stendhal dictated it in fifty-two days at fifty-five; Balzac wrote a seventy-page review calling it a masterpiece and nobody else noticed for sixty years. Thirty plates by Meissonier and Fattori, from soldiers to street urchins and river mornings, catch the Italian light of the court and camp Stendhal knew.
