Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Andreas Achenbach, Moritz von Schwind and Karl Friedrich Lessing. The Rhine legends retold by a professional folklorist - the Nibelung gold, the bishop and the mice, the knights and the river maidens - with the sources noted. Spence gives the same material as the guidebooks but knows where it came from. This edition is bound with sixty plates of Rhine painting from 1817 to 1913, among them works by Andreas Achenbach, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Hermann Both.
