Complete and unabridged, with 43 full-page plates by Thomas Moran, John Constable and James McDougal Hart. Chemistry, heat, light, electricity and mechanics taught by experiment, with hundreds of figures and the apparatus assumed to be homemade. John Henry Pepper ran the Royal Polytechnic and made famous the stage illusion still called Pepper's Ghost. He writes as a showman who is also a teacher, and the experiments are chosen because they can be seen from the back of a room. Its 303 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
