Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by William Orpen, Walter Sickert and Stanhope Forbes. Stories written during and just after the war - a family disintegrating in the Sussex countryside, a blinded officer, two soldiers billeted on a farm with a land-girl. The title story is Lawrence's coldest and it cost him a friendship, because everyone recognized the family. This edition includes a gallery of 58 plates of paintings bound with the book, with works by George Clausen, Stanhope Forbes and David Young Cameron, among others, dating from 1807 to 1927.
