Complete and unabridged, with 48 full-page plates by William Henry Davis, Jean-Léon Gérôme and J. M. W. Turner. Eight more stories of the jungle and the men at its edge: Mowgli's revenge on a village, the king's ankus and the deaths it causes, a prime minister who becomes a holy man in the hills, the Inuit and their sledge-dogs, the crocodile at the ford, the red dogs of the Deccan. Kipling wrote them in Vermont, and closed Mowgli's story here rather than in the first book. "The King's Ankus" is the coldest thing he wrote about the value people put on metal. Forty-eight plates of forest, rock, fakir and lion by painters including Shishkin and Rousseau carry the jungle's own weather into the tale.
