Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Thomas Moran, Sanford Robinson Gifford and George Catlin. How the American west was actually crossed, told through Boone, Crockett and Carson - three men who between them opened the trails and lived long enough to see what came down them. Hough later wrote The Covered Wagon and campaigned to save the last of the bison. This edition is bound with 60 plates of paintings by George Caleb Bingham, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and George Catlin, dating from 1835 to 1917, and includes one restored, coloured illustration.
