An illustrated story about autism and what it means to include a person with autism at school. Psychologist and psychoanalyst Miquel Gómez publishes his first book, ReMi, un nen que Fa Sol, with illustrations by the renowned illustrator Elena Nieto. This illustrated children's story addresses autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on how a person with autism can be included in the school environment. The story begins on the first day of preschool for a class of three-year-olds. The children arrive at school and discover the playground, the classrooms, their teachers and their new classmates. Among them is ReMi, a child with autism. Before long, everyone notices that ReMi behaves differently from his classmates, and they cannot make sense of what he does. The path to inclusion opens up when they begin to ask what meaning ReMi finds in something that makes no sense to them. Together, the teacher and the mother come to understand that ReMi's actions are his own particular way of symbolically representing an event that previously caused him anxiety, and that he has found a way to resolve his anxiety through music. When the teacher understands the meaning of ReMi's behaviour, she can support him and accompany him through his individual process of giving symbolic expression to his anxiety. She can also suggest activities —in this case related to music— that help him become included at school. Asking what something might mean to another person when it makes no sense to us opens the door to an inclusive relationship, both with people with autism and in other kinds of relationships.
