Complete and unabridged, with 56 full-page plates by John Atkinson Grimshaw, George Inness and Winslow Homer. An American who has fought in the French Foreign Legion escapes from a German prison camp, stumbles over the Swiss frontier without knowing it, and is taken in by a Russian and a girl called Tanya — and so into the Order of Nemi, a secret society working for revolution inside Germany, whose treasure has to be smuggled out of the Reich. George Gibbs wrote spy romances in the middle of the war and illustrated them himself; the society takes its name from Nemi, the grove of the golden bough. The run to Lake Constance with the money is his best sustained sequence. Fifty-six plates of American marine painting, from Edward Moran's Fog Off Gloucester to Shipwreck and Rescue, keep the sea chase and the smuggled gold in view.
