Complete and unabridged, with 59 full-page plates by Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Gustave Caillebotte. An American's sequel to The Count of Monte Cristo, published in 1878 and passed off for decades as Dumas's own — Dantès in the Paris of 1848, the revolution, and the debts the Count still owes. Flagg was a journalist, lawyer and United States consul in Venice; the book is a curiosity of literary forgery, and worth reading as the first evidence that Monte Cristo would never be allowed to end. Fifty-nine plates, among them works by Edvard Munch and Rosa Bonheur, gather scenes of harvest, orchard and hunt that echo the novel's long reckoning with what the past leaves standing.
