Complete and unabridged, with 46 full-page plates by Pierre-Augustin Thomire, Philippe Vignon and Noël Coypel. A reference shelf in one volume: a thousand gods, heroes and monsters of Greece, Rome, Egypt, India and the North, each given a paragraph and a source. Ellis compiled it for schools and readers who kept meeting these names in poetry and wanted them settled quickly. This edition adds a 46-plate gallery of paintings by Taunay, the brothers Glauber and others, plus twelve illustrations restored and coloured.
