Complete and unabridged, with 59 full-page plates by William Mulready, Richard Ansdell and Patrick Allan Fraser. A child and her grandfather flee a moneylender through the English midlands, pursued by the most cheerfully evil dwarf in fiction. When the instalments carrying Nell's illness reached New York, crowds met the ship at the dock shouting to know whether she lived. She did not, and Dickens said writing it nearly killed him too. Fifty-nine plates of painting by George Jones and William Mulready, from moonlit London streets to cottage interiors, follow the flight across England.
