Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Vasily Polenov, Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. A quarrel between an idle nobleman and a zoologist in a Black Sea town ends in a duel that settles nothing, together with other long stories. The Duel is the nearest Chekhov came to a novel and the two men are equally wrong. This edition includes sixty plates of painting bound with the text, among them works by Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Korovin and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and Constance Garnett's translation.
