Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney and Joseph Wright of Derby. A poisoner in a respectable English household, and the slow accumulation of small deaths. Bulwer-Lytton based it on the real case of Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, the art critic who murdered his relatives for insurance, and the outcry was such that he added a defensive preface. This edition carries all sixty plates bound with the text, among them works by Cruikshank, Westall and Vanmour, and prints both parts of the novel complete.
