Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet. A Paris household of retired clerks and small ambitions, and a marriage negotiated over a dowry nobody actually has. Balzac left it unfinished at his death and it was completed from his notes by another hand. This edition carries Katharine Prescott Wormeley's translation and fifty-seven plates bound with the text, with paintings by Honoré Daumier, Paul Gavarni, Camille Pissarro and Gustave Caillebotte.
