Complete and unabridged, with 43 full-page plates by Frederik Petersen, Salomon Hofling and Peter Edward Stroehling. The Finnish national epic retold as a story: the smith who forges the Sampo, the mill that grinds out plenty, and the war fought over it. Baldwin took the Kalevala and made it readable straight through without losing the strangeness of it. This edition carries a gallery of 43 plates bound with the text, among them paintings by Albert Christoph Dies, Barbara Regina Dietzsch and Jens Juel, alongside three illustrations restored and coloured for this printing.
