Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Marianne North, Thomas Hill and John Everett Millais. A Tyrolese peasant girl with a voice is heard singing on an alp by an English tourist and is carried down into a career and a marriage that the mountains had not prepared her for. Allen wrote the book in the scenery it describes and acknowledged Baillie-Grohman's work on the Tyrol for the local color. He was a popularizer of Darwin who paid the bills with fiction, and the anthropology shows. Fifty-eight plates after Tissot, Degas and others trace the stages of a young life, from childhood through courtship and departure, matching the arc of the Tyrolese singer's story.
