Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Albert Bierstadt, Everett Shinn and Winslow Homer. A boy thrown on New York by a stepfather's greed finds work, is cheated of it, and works his way back with the help of people who have nothing to spare. Alger wrote the same book many times and this is a fair specimen of the pattern. What is worth keeping is the accounting of a poor boy's week in the city of 1895. Fifty-eight plates of New York streets and night skies by John Sloan and Winslow Homer give the boy's city the look it had.
