Complete and unabridged, with 51 full-page plates by Martin Johnson Heade, George Inness and Asher Brown Durand. Ten years on at Plumfield: the school has become a college, the boys of the earlier books are grown, and Alcott takes each of them as far as she is willing to. She wrote it ill and unwilling, hounded by readers for a fourth March book, and finished it two years before she died. The last chapter says plainly that she is closing the story down so that nobody can ask her for more. Fifty-one American paintings from 1825 to 1905, by Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins among others, run alongside Alcott's farewell to Plumfield, their boys at the shore and in the schoolroom echoing her own.
