Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Vladimir Borovikovsky, Vasily Polenov and Rufin Sudkovsky. The Russian tales as Afanasyev collected them - Baba Yaga, the firebird, the frog princess, Koshchei the Deathless - gathered in the 1850s from the provinces. He assembled six hundred of them, more than the Grimms, and the censor kept back a good many. This edition adds sixty plates of painting bound with the text, among them Kuindzhi, Bronnikov, Perov and Clodt von Jürgensburg, plus an introduction, notes and glossary, in Leonard A. Magnus's translation.
