Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Peter Nicolai Arbo, Pekka Halonen and Michael Ancher. Grettir Ásmundarson is the strongest man in Iceland, unlucky from birth, outlawed at twenty and hunted for nineteen years — he cannot be beaten by any man, and he cannot bear to be alone in the dark, because of the eyes of Glam, the dead shepherd he wrestled by moonlight. Nobody knows who wrote it. The wrestling with Glam is the most famous meeting with the undead in all the sagas, and Grettir's outlawry is the loneliest thing in the sagas. Sixty plates from Erik Werenskiold and Anders Zorn among others, ranging across lonely shepherds, snowbound cottages and ploughing fathers, catch the northern isolation that runs through Grettir's outlaw years.
