Complete and unabridged, with 47 full-page plates by John Martin, Frederic Edwin Church and Caspar David Friedrich. A businessman and an eccentric scientist reach the moon in a sphere coated with a gravity-blocking metal, and find a civilisation under the crust where every citizen is bred for one task. Wells wrote the Selenites as an argument about the division of labor, and the return journey leaves one man behind. Forty-seven moonlit plates by painters including Adolph von Menzel and Ivan Aivazovsky follow the travellers from Berlin canals to the Bosporus and the open sea, matching the novel's nightward voyage.
