Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Francisco Goya, Arnold Böcklin and Odilon Redon. A young Frenchwoman is found in a Cornish gorge beside the railway, fallen or flung from a moving train, and nobody in the valley can say who she was. Suspicion settles on Bothwell Grahame, who will not account for his movements rather than compromise a married woman, and Edward Heathcote, a lawyer whose sister is engaged to him, goes to Paris to learn the girl's name and the man who met her at Charing Cross. Braddon builds the case backwards from the body, and the answer lies much closer to Penmorval than anyone there suspects. Fifty-eight plates of Cornish harbours, pilchard boats and Newlyn quays by painters from Goya to Kandinsky give the coast its own visual case file.
