Complete and unabridged, with 54 full-page plates by John Everett Millais, Adolph Tidemand and Théodore Ralli. A young man with an unearned reputation as a rider tries to keep it up across a hunting season, pursued by a mother with daughters. Surtees had a magistrate's eye for social pretense and a master of hounds' contempt for bad horsemanship, and uses both. This edition carries fifty-four bound plates, among them works by Grimshaw, de Loutherbourg and McGregor, alongside four illustrations restored and coloured for the first time.
