Complete and unabridged, with 55 full-page plates by Laurits Andersen Ring, James McNeill Whistler and Jan Ciągliński. A drifter agrees to deliver a packet of letters to London and finds himself in a country house where a claimant to a Balkan throne, a jewel thief and Scotland Yard are all waiting. Agatha Christie wrote it in 1925 as a thriller rather than a puzzle, and enjoyed herself: the plot has more disguises than corpses. Superintendent Battle appears here for the first time. Fifty-five plates of harbour light, fishmarkets and London streets by painters including Whistler and Zorn carry the salt air and shadowed corners of Christie's country house thriller.
