A British gladiator in Nero's Rome and the siege of Jerusalem that follows - the arena, the legions and the zealots on the wall. Whyte-Melville published it in 1863, long after he had left the army, and it was the most admired of his historical novels. This edition is bound with a gallery of 53 plates of painting, among them works by Aniello Falcone, Crescenzio Onofri and Hermann David Salomon Corrodi, together with five illustrations restored and coloured for this edition.
