Complete and unabridged. A man jailed nineteen years for stealing bread, the policeman who will not stop hunting him, and a barricade in a Paris street where students die for a republic that does not come. Hugo wrote most of it in exile on Guernsey, having carried the unfinished manuscript out of France in 1851. He sent his publisher a telegram consisting of one character, a question mark, and was answered with an exclamation mark. Its 209 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
