Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Sanford Robinson Gifford, Frederic Edwin Church and Asher Brown Durand. California described by a woman who had walked its deserts alone - the water, the light, the Owens valley being drained to fill Los Angeles taps. Austin fought that diversion and lost, and the anger is in the prose. This edition adds a gallery of 60 plates after Bierstadt, Moran, Church and Kensett, alongside 31 illustrations restored and coloured for this printing.
