Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by John Everett Millais, David Wilkie and Erskine Nicol. Scottish proverbs and proverbial sayings collected and explained - some thousands of them, from the pithy to the merciless. Hislop's is the standard collection and the commentary is as good as the sayings. This edition is bound with a gallery of 58 plates of painting, among them works by David Wilkie, Edvard Munch and John Collier, dating from 1735 to 1927.
