Complete and unabridged, with 59 full-page plates by Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Alexander von Kotzebue and Lovis Corinth. A Welsh regiment sails for the Crimea, and the officer telling the story has left a marriage question unsettled at home. Grant wrote some ninety books and had soldiered himself; the value here is the eye for detail — the transport ships, the winter camp, the pointless orders — from a man who knew how armies actually work. Fifty-nine plates, from Vereshchagin to Corinth, carry the war's weather and terrain across the century between 1814 and 1927.
