Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Marguerite Gérard, Louis-Léopold Boilly and Jacques-Louis David. The last hours of a condemned man, written entirely from inside his head, without a name or a crime given. Hugo published it anonymously at twenty-seven as an argument against the guillotine and it remains the most effective one ever written. This edition adds fifty-eight plates of paintings by Géricault, Vernet, Gabé and others, and Sir Gilbert Campbell's translation.
