Complete and unabridged, with 49 full-page plates by John Constable, John Atkinson Grimshaw and George Morland. Yorkshire in 1812, mill-owners against machine-breakers, and two women who want work of their own in a world that offers them only marriage. Charlotte Brontë wrote it while her brother and both her sisters were dying, and the argument about what women are for is unmistakably hers. This edition binds 49 plates after painters including Constable, Munch and George Jones, with 11 illustrations restored and coloured.
