A provincial matchmaking comedy in which a senile prince is manoeuvred towards a marriage, and a second story about a husband who befriends his late wife's lover. Dostoevsky wrote the first in Siberian exile to earn his way back into print, and the second in Dresden ten years later. This edition adds 59 plates of painting from 1807 to 1925, among them Tropinin, Kustodiev and Korzukhin, in Frederick Whishaw's translation.
