The painted walls of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae, drawn on the spot by Wilhelm Zahn as the rooms were uncovered, and reproduced here at printing size. The year under each plate is the year the spade reached the room. A great many of these walls no longer look like this, and some no longer exist: for those rooms these plates are the only surviving likeness in colour. The third volume of Ornaments of the World.
