Complete and unabridged, with 10 full-page plates by Wilhelm Leibl, Ludwig Willroider and Lucas Cranach the Elder. The household tales as the brothers Grimm set them down: Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, the goose-girl, the valiant little tailor, snow white and the seven dwarfs. The brothers were philologists collecting evidence of an older German language, and softened the stories through seven editions as they discovered children were reading them. Enough of the original is left here that the punishments still land. Ten paintings from Lucas Cranach to Hans Thoma, 1532 to 1890, run alongside the tales as a visual counterpoint of moonlight, castles and forest interiors.
