Complete and unabridged, with 26 full-page plates by Max Liebermann, Hans Thoma and Fritz von Uhde. Fifty-one of the household tales, chosen for American children by the librarian Frances Jenkins Olcott: the frog-king, Rapunzel, Haensel and Grethel, the Bremen town-musicians, King Thrushbeard, Rumpelstiltskin, the goose-girl at the well, Maid Maleen, and many that nursery selections usually leave out. Olcott took Margaret Hunt's translation, then counted the most accurate in English, as her text, going back to the German where Hunt turned stiff, breaking up the longest sentences and dropping a few passages she thought unfit for children. The brothers had gathered the tales from tellers in and around Kassel and went on revising them through seven editions. Twenty-six plates of forest clearings, village streets and spring fields, painted between 1785 and 1919 by artists including Carl Spitzweg and Hans Thoma, set beside the tales like the world the brothers collected them from.
