Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Vasily Polenov, Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. A schoolboy forges a small coupon, and the consequences run down through a dozen lives to a murder and back up again to a redemption. Tolstoy wrote it in his last years to demonstrate how evil propagates and how it stops; he never finished revising it. This edition is bound with sixty plates of paintings by Ilya Repin, Vasily Perov, Hugo Vogel and Leon Kowalski, dating from 1838 to 1917.
