Complete and unabridged, with 19 full-page plates by Francisco Goya, Woutherus Mol and Michiel Versteegh. A girl is left in the guardianship of an uncle once suspected of killing a guest in a room locked from the inside, in a house nobody visits. Le Fanu wrote the finest of all locked-house novels and did not need a ghost in it; the dread is entirely a matter of who holds the keys. This edition binds nineteen plates after painters including Goya, Kersting and Fox-Strangways, alongside forty-four illustrations restored and coloured for the first time.
