Complete and unabridged, with 34 full-page plates by George Clausen, Christian Aigens and William Logsdail. Seven late cases and the title story, in which Holmes spends two years in America growing a goatee to catch a German spy on the eve of the war. Doyle wrote the last of these while his own son was at the front. The east wind speech at the end is the closest he ever came to saying goodbye to the character. Thirty-four plates of painting from 1833 to 1928, among them William Logsdail and George Clausen, carry the weather of the period across these last cases.
