Complete and unabridged, with 55 full-page plates by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Jacob van Ruisdael. The Nibelung story retold for children: the dwarf's gold, the dragon under the linden, the sword reforged, Brunhild on her ring of fire, and the spear in Siegfried's back at the hunting spring. Baldwin worked from the German and Norse versions together and kept the fatality of both. It is the version through which generations of English-speaking children met the story, long before Tolkien. Fifty-five plates, from Dürer's Young Hare to Carl Carlsen, trace the northern world of the tale across four centuries of painting.
