Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by James Tissot, Spencer Gore and Robert Bevan. Berry Pleydell and his cousins motor about the English countryside getting into scrapes that resolve themselves in flirtation — the first of the Berry books, and the template for twenty years of them. Yates was Cecil Mercer, a barrister who was junior counsel at the Oscar Wilde trial and Saki's cousin; between the wars his two inventions, Berry and the thriller hero Jonah Mansel, sold to everybody. Fifty-eight plates by painters including James Tissot and Henry Sargent, ranging from 1795 to 1922, picture the flirtations, dinner parties and farewells that fill these pages.
