Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by Thomas Gainsborough, John Cleveley the Younger and Francis Grant. The first year of an ordinary marriage - the house, the money, the quarrels, the child - with no crime in it at all. Doyle wrote it deliberately as the opposite of everything he was famous for, and his publishers were dismayed. This edition carries fifty-seven plates of paintings bound with the text, among them works by Edward Hicks, Edvard Munch and Francis Grant, dating from 1746 to 1929.
